It was very easy for Marilyn to cry. Often the reason for her unhappiness was clear - Mr Miller had ignored her, she was displeased with her appearence, or she was simply bored. Other times, she seemed to cry for no reason, and she spent many dreezly afternoons in bed, gently weeping. One day while I was cleaning, I dusted two small pictures on the night stand by her bed. One was of a pretty woman, taken many years before. The other was of Abraham Lincoln.

"Who's the lady in the picture ?" I asked Marilyn. She was in a chatty mood that day.

"My mother", she replied cheerily.

"I should have guessed", I said. "You look just like her. Very pretty."

"Gee, thanks. She lives in a sanitarium in California.", Marilyn said without shame. "And that's my father", she said, pointing to Abraham Lincoln. She began to laugh.

"Come on', I said. "I know who that is".

"It's my father", she insisted jokingly. "Well, actually", she continued in a less silly voice, "I don't know who  my father is. My mother never told me. So he might as well be my fathe. Why not ? I can pick any father I want"?
